A Simple Fire Pit

I have wished for a simple fire pit out in our backyard for some time now. I envisioned quiet evenings sitting outside with family, friends, neighbors eating marshmallows all the while listening to the crickets and watching the stars. It was a beautiful thought in my mind and so I kept harassing my dear husband (who already has more work to do than any one man should have) and even going so far as to include it on a Honey-Must-Do List that I created in (GASP) church!!! That list included 4 items that we both agreed on early in the summer needed to be accomplished this very summer. My simple fire pit made the list and I was PUMPED!!! The other three things on the list were not nearly as urgent in my humble opinion and since the simple fire pit was going to improve our quality of life by adding peacefulness, entertainment, and simple enjoyment it needed to be done ASAP.

So, my DH got himself up one Saturday in August and declared that the fire pit was going to be constructed that very day (imagine my excitement)! Now, I was envisioning him going into the fields and gathering large rocks and some smaller rocks for the bottom of the simple fire pit....DH had envisioned all along something entirely different (imagine my shock)!!! He got in the family SUV and headed to our local outdoor & landscaping retailer who also happens to be owned by our neighbor. I did not question the man because I did not want to jinx the very likely possibility that I might be the proud owner as early as that night of a simple fire pit. He called me minutes later declaring that he had found exactly what he thought would work in our yard. I prayed it was not a little metal thing....I wanted a thing with a more natural, camplike feel, but I kept quiet (so as not to jinx). He told me it would be done that very afternoon and we'd be enjoying the simple fire pit by that night (could it BE?!?!).

My man came home within just an hour and began putting the blocks/stones in place. He said it was much like doing Lego building....he was enjoying it! I was basking in the idea of quiet, peaceful, marshmallow roasting with my placid mellow children that evening. The result of my husband's hard work that day was stunning and I am still impressed that he did it in such a short amount of time (I think it took about 4 hours including the time to go to the retailer).

Last night we enjoyed our simple fire pit again. We use it nearly every weekend and most every Friday night. We were celebrating my sweet husband's birthday last night by the fire and I was remembering back to when we didn't have a simple fire pit and recalling how I envisioned quiet peaceful evenings by the fire sitting by the ones you hold dear watching the stars and listening to the crickets....and I had to laugh!!! Let me just share that the time spent with our crew of three lunatic boys by our "simple fire pit" is ANYTHING BUT PEACEFUL!!!! Chaos reins and children pump themselves silly with Hershey bars and marshmallows until they are a frenzy of wildness. They drive around on their battery powered 4 wheelers careening dangerously close to those of us sitting "peacefully around the simple fire pit" where we can barely hear each other talk. But as zoo-ish as it is I think to myself that healthy happy kids are what I have and what could make a mom any happier? Kids running around in the dark with their flashlights and hopped up on sugar.....that is what summer nights are all about and I hope that they'll remember these nights by the simple fire pit with fondness. I know I will.

Vacation Day

No we didn't hit Disney World or the beach on our vacation day, but that's OK!  A vacation day here at our house means that we can RELAX and not rush around like maniacs in the morning for school or church.  We had no school yesterday (Friday) so we all enjoyed the morning here at home by watching a little t.v., playing some Boggle, coloring and painting some neat pictures, going outside between the rain showers, and generally doing not much.  The boys enjoyed it so much and so did I.  Andy had to work, but he came home early and that was nice.  He took the two little boys to see Monsters vs. Aliens at the movie theater and that gave me about 3 QUIET hours at home with just Micah!!  (What a treat!!!) So I did what any mom would do (ok, maybe not any mom) I read a few chapters of my book, thought about doing some laundry, took a nice warm bath while listening to my iPod, thought about mopping the kitchen floor, ate a popsicle while I watched Paula "the Dean".  It was awesome (did I already say that?!).  When the boys came home they flopped into bed and so did I.  What a great day!  Did I forget to mention that my dad came over to watch the boys earlier in the day so that I could go shopping with my mom?  FUN!!!

Sometimes it's nice to be still at home....not have anywhere to go, have no pressing issues to deal with.  I'm realizing now that I'm working part time that sometimes your body really needs days like that and it's OK to just take a day or two to really enjoy your home and your kids without the pressures or worries of "getting stuff done", which is what moms do like 99% of the time.

Today we've got some things on our agenda: do some laundry, color Easter eggs, prepare food and table for Easter dinner tomorrow, cut the boys hair (Andy's job), but it will all be done at a snail's pace, I promise!  :)

We Ditched our Kids....

Yes!!  We did!!  For the first time in 4 years we left them in the care of my parents and Andy and I went out of town and spent two (count them...1, 2!!!) nights away and we LOVED it.  I really shouldn't go on and on or some of you faithful readers would think I don't care for my children, but that would be FALSE.  In fact, being away from them made me realize that I'm crazy about them, but it also made me realize that I'm a fairly (notice my choice of the former word) sane person when I'm away from them for prolonged periods of time. All that to say we had such a nice time away. Thank you mom and dad!!!  :)

We stayed in a wonderful B&B in Charles Town, WV (where my dad was born) and we did some sight seeing in the area.  It's a lovely, quaint little town with lots of history. The town was begun by George Washington's brother, Charles and he lived there until he died and is now buried there on his estate.  It's also the town where John Brown was tried and executed for treason right before the civil war. Harpers Ferry, WV is right down the road and we absolutely loved the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park....if you ever get a chance to check it out you should.  It was very informative and includes lots of little shops and eateries in the mix, too!
Not really a great place for kids in strollers as there are lots of stairs and hills.  :)  It was a fun day of learning more of our country's history and I hope to go back sometime soon.

Just to explain the pics....the top one was taken atop the hill in Harper's Ferry (the location of the armory that John Brown and his cohorts were invading in hopes of an uprising of blacks); the second picture is of the marker that stands outside of the home where J.B. was hung (did you know it took more than 30 minutes before they found no pulse....ugh!); the third picture is of the courthouse where he was tried for treason (did you know that the verdict came back in under 30 minutes and was unanimous); the fourth picture was taken part way up the hill in Harper's Ferry....amazing view of the Shenandoah River (the Catholic church you see to the right flew a Union Jack flag during the Civil War as a sign of neutrality.....and as a result it was one of the few churches that was not harmed during the war).

Have a great week!

Spring is A-Comin'....

Today was such a beautiful day that it's hard not to think that it will be spring TOMORROW!  Oh how I wish.  I've never been one to hate winter (I actually really love winter), but this time of year is when I start wishing the cold would blow away and warmth, color, and chirping would join us again.  I was revisiting some photos from last spring and summer and I came upon this one of Caleb riding the 4 wheeler (looking too cute for words I might add).  My boys love being outside and I LOVE that they love it!  It helps to have a boy cousin next door who loves being out with them.  They all headed out today for a couple of hours where they proceeded to pull up many of my perennials (Will thought he was helping me weed) and they also began spreading dirt from the flower beds onto the sidewalk to "cover up the holes in the sidewalk"....gotta love the helpfulness.  ;)  Spring is right around the corner!  YEEHAWW!

I've Made the Switcherooo....

But not without kicking and screaming.  I have been having such problems with my iWeb apps that I finally gave up and decided (with Andy's help) to come on over to the brighter side.  :)  I am hoping with fewer roadblocks in my way I'll be better able to update our family blog and keep friends and family informed with the incredibly exciting lives we lead (HAHA)!!  So here we go.  Thanks for coming along for the journey!
